a) In a special education classroom, many different skills have to repeated and modeled many more times than they would have been in a gen ed classroom, in order for children to grasp and retain the knowledge. It falls to the teacher to know when a skill needs to be demonstrated more and more practice has to be given, without underestimating the students. Meaningful learning is essential in a special education classroom which may have a far more diverse constellation than general education classrooms. Students being given special education are going to associate the facts being taught to them in a much different way than their peers in gen ed.
Mostly, for a gen ed classroom, my goals for my learners would be for them to work to their fullest potential to be able to be in gen ed placements as much as possible. This might mean cutting down the time things have to be modeled for them. The chapter taught me that organization is a key component in retention and that information must be presented in a clear organized fashion. Students must also know how to properly organize things for themselves and know what works best for them in terms of memory methods.
In terms of my CSEL case, Lisa is upset because she does not get to do what she wants within the group I could try to make the role she is given more appealing by finding out what does interest her and turn it into a meaningful learning experience by comparing the two. (I.E. Lisa is assigned to be the scribe/recorder within the group, complains, but she is interested in science. I could show her that scientists take down a lot of data, and so being the scribe is like taking down data as a scientist)

  1. Your idea to relate Lisa's role to her interests is great. This will not only motivate her to learn the concept, but will provide meaningful learning and help her to remember when she learned "like a scientist". I also agree that organization and meaningful learning is essential in special education. Both of these will aid the students in actually learning and remembering a concept and prevents a teacher from spending time on reteaching lessons.
