Chapter 6

a) As a special educator, my students might struggle with recall or retrieval of information, and need a better way to learn it. Some essential skills I would want my students to have would be a meaningful learning set and the ability to use mnemonics. These two skills will help the students with recall and retrieval of information because they have learned to apply the concept to their personal lives, and created a song or keyword method for remembering. Visual imagery is also a skill I would want to teach them. Mental pictures, mnemonic songs, and real life application can assist in learning that will stick with the student.

(b) In my case study,I will use tools that aid in getting and keeping the student's attention, such as providing frequent breaks, minimizing distractions and varying instructional methods. I will also want to teach him using visual imagery. He is a kindergartner who struggles with staying in his seat, leaving other people's things alone, staying in his own space, and leaving the room without permission. A visual image of my expectations for him staying in his space might be drawn onto a card and taped to his desk. This would encourage his behavior of staying in his space.
