I think it’s
really important for preschoolers to be questioned ‘Why?’. Many times in the
classroom, one child will give a response and the other children will follow up
with the same answer. Also, it can be pretty interesting to hear a child’s
reasoning for an answer. Many times children will answer something without thoroughly
thinking it through. I love to ask a child a question followed by a follow up
and question and watch as they try to explain their answer. Many times they
confuse themselves and have to take a moment to work through the cognitive
dissonance and come up with a different answer at the end.
In regards to the CSEL study, I would brainstorm
many different ways to keep the lessons as interesting and engaging as
possible. Willard’s attention span is probably pretty short since he constantly
gets off task to ask how far away playtime is. I know this action is a form of
avoidance, and I believe that getting to know Willard would be an important
tool in modifying the lessons to make them as engaging as possible. I would
also try to throw in some physical aspects to all lessons. Since Willard has a
tendency to wander around the classroom I would attempt to make each lesson
have some sort of physical component. Whether it be a hopping component to a
counting lesson or a thumbs up to show if something was right or wrong, I would
try to throw in some sort of movement so that Willard had a break from keeping
his pencil on paper.
