Chapter 7

1. (knowing) What is a concept?

2. (Analyze & Create) Discuss at least 4 key means that children may use to acquire abstract understanding of concepts?

2 comments:

  1. 1. A concept helps us mentally group objects or events that are similar somehow.

*This could also be included in the category "Understanding" in Bloom's Taxonomy because we are applying out understanding of the definition by giving our definition of the term.

    2. 4 ways children can acquire abstract understanding of concepts includes: being able to give a definition of the concept or concepts, listing characteristics that most examples of a concept have, think of many examples of the concept and identify examples and non-examples of a concept or concepts.

*This question could also be included in the "Apply" category of Bloom's Taxonomy because we are asked to apply and combine our knowledge of concepts and teaching strategies for teaching about concepts in order to answer this question.

  2. 1. A concept is a way to mentally place similar ideas (objects or events) into categories or groups.

    2. Four key strategies that children may use to acquire abstract understanding of concepts include: explore each topic in depth, explain how new ideas relate to students' prior knowledge, model for students that conceptual understanding is more important than knowledge of isolated facts, and ask students to play the teacher and teach the concept to another student.

Noel, I agree with Gabrielle that the first question could be understanding, and the second could be apply. I think your second question could have also been synthesis if you'd asked us to come up with examples of these strategies or examples of scenarios and a strategy that would apply.
