Informal Assessment vs. Formal Assessment
Informal assessment: Noting that a child in the classroom has difficulty with matching colors on a pattern sheet.
Formal assessment: Sitting each child down individually and asking them to point out specific colored blocks to see if they have memorized color names yet.
Both assessments would clue the teacher in on whether or not a child has mastered memorizing and differentiating colors.

Paper-pencil Assessment vs. Performance Assessment
Paper-pencil assessment: Asking a child to draw a happy face
Performance Assessment: Asking a child to make a specific emotion face.
Both assessments deal with socio-emotional tasks.

Standardized Test vs. Teacher-developed Assessment
Standardized Test: The WPPSI (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence) to identify any cognitive delay or learning difficulties.
Teacher-developed Assessment: Assessing children on their ability to count to 5.

Criterion- referenced Assessment vs. Norm-referenced Assessment
Criterion: Asking children to count to 5 and noting how many the children forget, put out of order, etc.
Norm: Comparing one child's ability to count to five to all of his classmates.

Traditional Assessment vs. Authentic Assessment
Traditional: Seeing is children are able to hop on one foot for 5 seconds.
Authentic: Seeing if children can jump on playground while playing.

Advantages to Norm-Referenced assessments and Criterion Referenced assessments
Norm-Referenced: Allows educators to assess children based on the level of children around them. May clue teachers in to any problems so that an intervention can be planned.

Criterion Referenced: Only compares the child to themselves. Makes it easy to note the progress that a child may be making. Especially useful in special education.

Disadvantages to Norm-Referenced assessments and Criterion Referenced assessments
Norm-Referenced: Makes it difficult to see the child as an individual. Some children are better at performance based testing rather than paper-pencil assessment.
Criterion Referenced: Doesn't allow children to be compared nationally.
