In my future classroom it will be important for me to make the material interesting for all of my students. It would not be realistic for me to think that all of my students will be excited about studying music theory, composers, and sight reading songs. I will have to be able to make it applicable to their lives, and interesting to them. For example, if I require my men's ensemble to practice sight singing I need to explain to the my purpose behind it. It's to make them the best singers I know they can be. If they can practice sight singing and be able to start singing music more quickly when I pass it out, we can learn more advanced pieces that will push us and make us a better ensemble. It will be important for me to encourage them, put them in groups, and have competitions and evaluations of their sight singing.

Chapter 11
Two of the theories of motivation that intrigued me the most were extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motion. Students that exhibit extrinsic motivation are motivated by elements outside of themselves and irrelevant to the activity being completed. They are more concerned about getting the task complete and coming to an end. Students that exhibit intrinsic motivation are motivated by elements within themselves and take on the responsibility of the task at hand. They enjoy learning because it gives them pleasure and a sense of accomplishment. In their minds they are mastering a skill and completing something that is important and has a deeper meaning. These intrinsic learners will thrive in the classroom because they are more engaged with the material. In the same sense, students are motivated by setting goals. Two of the goals that resonated with me are the mastery goal and the performance goal. A mastery goal displays an aspiration to obtain additional knowledge and master a skill. A performance goal creates a desire to receive approval from others. I know I am more motivated to accomplish something and genuinely master a concept when I am able to apply what I am learning to a bigger concept. I absorb the most when I am setting goals for myself and interested in what I am learning. I think that this is an important concept for teachers to grasp. When students are interested in a topic they are going to want to engage themselves in the material and work hard to master the concept. This requires teachers to understand how their students think, learn, what interests them, and why it interest them.

I really like your enthusiam about teaching, but I would say that in real world you will find more extrinsic motivated kids than intrisic ones, when they are somehow motivated. It makes our lives more difficult since, as the author said, we have to start many times with extrisic motivation techniques or activities to engage our students in class activities, and them cross finger and push hard to see in some of those students that you could motivated become intrisic motivated kids.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that music is an area that can motivate kids easily than math. We all enjoy music, but not all enjoy math. So, explaining the student why they are doing what they are could help them to understand better future goal and be more engage in your classes.
I enjoyed your explanation on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and how you applied it to your field. Today in class I heard you saying how you have to rethink things to make it apply to music and reading this helped me to connect with you better. I think that your example would work well in your class. I was in band in middle school and one year we had thee most amazing teacher and the next, a total dud. Reading this made me think about why one teacher's style worked better than the other. Instilling intrinsic motivation in us was definitely what made the difference. Reading your response made me realize that a lot of what you stated in your example is what my first teacher did. We knew some of the music was tough and boring, but she let it be known that once we mastered those songs, we would be much better band members and new songs would be much more fun and easier. Which would make the whole band experience so much better and make us so proud of ourselves, which was more than enough motivation.
